10 years with C3: Growing with GROW

CampGROW 2018_4.jpg

I started volunteering with Calvary Community Care (C3) in 2011 helping to check content words. In 2012, I taught my first GROW class at St George's Student Care Centre which opened my eyes and heart to the needs of struggling readers.

Sounding out letters, blending first, middle and final parts of the word. These all seem so easy for regular students but not for those who find these frustrating and confusing.

I remember one child in Pei Chun Primary school where we taught GROW lessons before the afternoon session started. He had been crying because he had forgotten to wear his PE tee-shirt. Understandably, he was quiet throughout the lesson. In the last 15 minutes of the lesson, he spontaneously read out the words on flashcards unprompted. I could see the spark of confidence as he read out the words. That moment was priceless and so rewarding!

For those considering volunteering with C3 - perseverance is key because it takes time for you to see God at work.
